The performance “Ouroboros Breath” reflects on primordial myths about the cyclical perception of time. For many indigenous peoples, nature was the herald of continuous processes of renewal, in which cycles interact with human life. The understanding of cyclical time is present in the ritual practices, myths, and symbols of various cultures, such as the snake of Ouroboros, which eats its tail in Egyptian mythology and later in the symbolism of alchemists, and the snake of Yormunganda in Scandinavian mythology.
In the view of the ancient Baltic world, the notion of cyclical time is vividly seen in sutartines – traditional Lithuanian polyphonic songs, which are performed by singers walking in a circle and singing in canon, with each singer joining in at staggered intervals. Synthesizing ritual singing and polysemantic symbols, the performance “Ouroboros Breath” refers to ritual practices that are closely intertwined with the notion of cyclical time.
