What if there is no ‘it’ in nature surrounding us? What if everything around us is alive and pulsating? What if the personhood is extended beyond all who breathe? How would you communicate with the surrounding world and the seemingly 'other'?
In the performance “Animacy”, I engaged with spectators one by one. I invited each audience member to share in the intimacy between us through interactions involving gaze, touch, and encounters with non-human biological entities. Speaking in my own imaginary language, I led participants through experiences such as holding land snails, touching soil, and washing hands in milk.
I aimed to explore intimacy, personal connection, and sexuality as fundamental aspects of communication and life force. My goal was to transcend the conventional performance-audience relationship, moving beyond voyeurism to offer an immersive and thought-provoking experience for spectators. I emphasized that each viewer was a co-author of the performance, prompting them to ponder whether meaningful encounters with the 'other/stranger' were possible.
